Depending what exact features of iPhoto you require, you could try
Picasa [http://picasa.google.com/linux/] -- it's not free open source
but is free as in beer and my wife's had a good experience using the
Windows version.

The FAQ doesn't say for sure but does mention that (1) it supports
"most" RAW formats including Nikon and (2) that it's built on gPhoto
which seems to have pretty good support, though that may just be for
the capture/import portion of the program; I'm not clear on that.

My favorite feature is the library/catalog function. You can add IPTC
keywords directly to a .jpg, so it's not like some cataloging programs
that only maintain their own database of keywords, though I'm not sure
how it tracks RAW keywords. But anyway, you can do various flavors of
contrast/brightness/color adjustments as well as having buttons for
red-eye reduction, cropping, straightening, etc. Oh, there are a bunch
of sepia, defocus, tint, and other effect functions too.
Again, maybe you were looking for a speech-free program but Picasa
works pretty well if you weren't.
