On Kubuntu (probably something similar on Ubuntu/Xubuntu) in addition
to setting a root password, you also need to tell kdm to allow root to
log in.  It's a 1 line change:

sh-3.1$ diff /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmr{c~,c}
246c246
< AllowRootLogin=false
---
> AllowRootLogin=true
sh-3.1$
