steve@gashuffer:~$ getconf NGROUPS_MAX
65536

You need a newer glibc :)

I see that Debian stable has it set to 32 as well.  I guess it's
something that's been fixed upstream in the meantime, and just hasn't
made it out the door into a release yet.
