[PLUG] when /dev/dsp goes away

A machine on which sound used to work now has no /dev/dsp.  (Needless
to say, I can't play sound.)  The machine still has the same sound
card.

    jeff@krypton:~ $ lspci

I've googled, but I'm not quite sure what to do if /dev/dsp doesn't
even exist!  Any pointers?
