Yes.  This is better.  I was using 
mplayer -dumpstream <url>
which creates a file named stream.dump in the current directory.  Then you 
have to rename it.

I was confusing -dumpfile with -dumpaudio.  According to man mplayer, if you 
use -dumpstream and -dumpaudio in the same command only the last option will 
be used.
