so from here:

- what's in /etc/default/hal and /etc/default/dbus, if anything?

- try adding DAEMON_OPTS="--verbose=yes" to /etc/default/hal

- if that does nothing, try running "strace /usr/sbin/hald" and see if
that hangs in the same way.
