Re: [PLUG] ubuntu dedicated servers -- recommendations

Your better off just getting your own server, install OS to your liking, then find a plain colo provider.

Be wary of providers offering dedicated servers below $99.

Think about it. On a 12-month term, $99 a month plan for dedicated server allocates about 40% to equipment and 60% to everything else (i.e. colo).

$40 x 12 = $480

What kind of server are you getting for $480?

Mostly likely a 1-2 yr old tower built from OEM parts that wont survive another year.

If you buy a brand new Dell PowerEdge 850 (for around $800), and go with a $60 a month colo, over three years it ends up being less then $99/month. And the Dell is under warranty for 3 years.

Just something to think about.

Thanks Darian. NYI's site is quoting me over $300/month... either
they're expensive, or I estimated something incorrectly.

Sprocket is coming to $99/month, but for a low-end machine... I think
I can get a better deal elsewhere.

Neither offers Ubuntu (at least not mentioned on their sites) but they
*do* offer Debian, which I suppose I could live with.

Right now, leaning towards M5 or RackMounted.com...

Any other Philly/NY recommendations? Want to be able to club someone
over the head when things crash ;)

Hello all.

I am looking for a reliable hosting solution for a dedicated
server, which can run the following: --Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Dapper
Drake --Apache2 --MySQL 5 (CRITICAL) --PHP5 (CRITICAL) --root
shell access (CRITICAL)

I have done some cursory searches, and have come up with the
following:

http://www.m5hosting.com/ubuntu-dedicated-server.php http://www.rackmounted.com/celerond.php http://www.vpslink.com/ (NOT dedicated, they use virtualization)

Want to know if anyone has any recommendations -- I am
currently paying $100/month for a dedicated server running
RHEL, Ensim,
PHP4 and
MySQL4.

I am looking to get away from RHEL and rpm-hell, and find an
Ubuntu host.

Thanks.
