only time backlight turned on so far was when I cover the sensors with my hands or last night when I turned off the light. Not sure why the keys would be harder to read with the light on. The letters are transparent so it's almost unnoticable in daylight.

I plan to test battery next. I wanted to let them get a chance to charge for a while.

I don't know if your laptop is better at sensing light or not, but you
may notice the backlight turing on occasionally which makes the keys
harder to read.

If you don't mind plunking down the $80 for Parallels Desktop for Mac
you can get your Linux lovin sans the dual boot annoyances (and give
us a review :).
