I just ran CAT5e cable along the baseboard and through one hole that was
already in the wall. (Tip: Crimp the cable *after* feeding in through
the hole. heh) Stranded cable tends to lay flat and be more resistant
to damage.

There is another good question. I also want to run a long cable. Do
you have a suggestion for that? Thanks.

Can the IPW2100 or IPW2200 be placed in monitor mode for passive

The WRT54GS is good. I might have had trouble with DynDNS updates
though. Right now I'm just using a wired Linksys RTP300 supplied by
Vonage. I ran a long cable from the living room to the bedroom. I
prefer that over wireless.

As for a router, I have no problems with a linksys wrt54g. Supports

and works well.
+1 on the WRT54G. I like the IPW2100 or IPW2200 for Linux client WiFi
access (those are the Centrino WiFi chipsets).
