It is possible, but distributions do not ship these codecs because they are 
not legally distributable in many countries without a license from their 
respective vendors.  It is, however, entirely possible to get them from 3rd 
party sources, which would allow you to encode and decode with them.  The 
procedure varies across distributions, so could you tell which one(s) you 
use?
