I haven't tried TrueCrypt, but I have implemented dm-crypt on Kubuntu on several laptops, as well as on my own laptop (which dual boots Kubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft and Debian Sid, both of which share a jfs /home).  It's straightforward to set up (I also encrypt the swap partition) and has excellent performance.  I highly recommend it.  YMMV.
