[PLUG] power management suddenly stops working at login screen

I use Kanotix 2005-04, which uses x.org, kernel 2.6.14 (kanotix' own special version of course) and kdm as login manager.

Until recently, while at the login manager, the monitor would automatically go to suspend after 10 minutes or so. This has suddenly stopped happening, without me having upgraded anything or edited any config files.

If I do a "xset dpms force off" the monitor does go into its suspend mode (power light goes from green to orange). When a user is logged in, the suspend choice in the Control Center works normally.

Following the instructions I found here:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Automatically_turn_off_your_monitor

I tried adding this to /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
---------------
Section "Monitor"
    Option "DPMS"

Section "ServerLayout"
    Option "OffTime" "20"
---------------

I did not have a "Section "ServerLayout"" and adding that produced errors, so that X would not load.

Anyone else ever dealt with this?
