A) how can you calculate this so you don't get a big surprise bill? I wanted to use my current T1 to baseline. So if I were to peak my T1 100% all month, how much usage would that be. I have a a pretty good idea of how much traffic I have now - so maybe a could figure out how much i'll need for growth.

If this is the route you want to go, I would recommend purchasing a connection that charges based on bandwidth and not transfer.  I would also recommend that you make doubly sure that there is no cap and no "burst" bandwidth.  These both lead to billing surprises if you go over.

If you want burst bandwidth, then you have to ask the prospective colo how to calculate the usage.  Most use the 95/5 rule.  Here is a link that can explain this rule better than I can:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burstable_billing

If you're stuck and you can't afford an uncapped connection, here is how to calculate the amount of transfer you'd need to run a connection 24/7:

Transfer per month =
(30 (days) * 24 (hrs) *  3600 (seconds in an hour) * 1.5Mb (connection speed [note that this is in megabits]) / 8 (because there are 8 bits in a byte)) = number of MB (mega bytes)
Using these calculations, a 1.5 Mb connection could use up 486000 MB in 30 days, or 474.6 GB.

B) who is your colo with? I'm investigating providers

My company uses USLec.  I can't say too much for them...we purchased the space, and we don't use it :-/.  I can thank my predecessor for that one.

So with a T1, if it was maxed my montly usage would be 463,485Mb? that doesn't sound right to me.

Well, what's your existing pipe? Your ISP probably specifies it in bits per
second. In which case:

monthly use (Megabytes)= (bits-per-second/8) * 60 * 60 * 24 * 30 / 1048576
