Did you try editing the xorg.conf file by hand to put in the values
that you want?  What if you provide *only* those values so X can't get
distracted by other values?  (Check out the resolution lines in my
post from 19:00 today as an example.  With the commented-out line I
don't get 1920x1200.  Swapping which line is commented out I do.)
