Jeff,
Try commenting out the "dri" module. Maybe the "glx" module too.  Use
the "ati" driver if at all possible.

The fancy features usually require the "fglrx" binary driver. (Ick!)
What qualifies as a fancy feature can vary...

I had a terrible time configuring my Matrox card for dual head.  It
worked after I commented out the dri module and the modeline and modes
statements.
