Re: [PLUG] [slightly OT] (Mac OS X) Is it me or can't you do this with Linux?

2) January will come fast, faster than you would ever be able to switch
OSes and infrastructure. I recommend ordering as many XP Pro licenses as
you can afford or will need right now. That should get your current
infrastructure through another 18-24 months. You'll need this time to make
any transition.

This is a very good idea. No matter what you might wish to happen, any
migration, be it to Vista, Mac, or Linux, will take much longer than you
plan.

I've been through many different OS changes during my career and I would comment -- there is no MIGRATION here. You are talking about a full CONVERSION... even from XP to VISTA, it is NOT a simple upgrade.

Users will need to learn A LOT of new ways of doing things.

They will discover that much of what they did before can no longer be done
in the same way. Not only will the Look and Feel be different but so will the
actual steps they need to follow to accomplish anything.

Your experience as a SA will be trivial when compared to the trauma your
users will experience. (Remember, to them, the computer is simply a tool
they use to get done the job they are being paid to do. They don't care what
it is or why, they just want to get THEIR job done.)

Chris is so very right -- six months is an incredibly short time to plan
and execute end-user RETRAINING... breaking old habits and instilling
new ones.

This also means that this is a golden window of opportunity to switch OS.

It doesn't matter much which platform you chose, you will have a significant
user education and expectation management problem far in excess of any
system level support issues.

And don't forget. Six months from January, somebody will come up with a database
that can't be read under the new environment -- that was so important to them
they forgot about its existence until they have to do the year-end closing, and
now the need it by 6 pm tonight!
