After my first stab at building a hypothetical configuration I have
done some homework and picked out two motherboards that could function
easily as a standalone MythTV system or a frontend.

CPU:
Intel Core 2 Duo T5600 Merom 1.83 GHz $250

HDHomeRun $170 + existing pcHDTV cards

Motherboards
Both feature:
2x SATA 150
1x IDE
Intel GMA 950
GigE

AOpen i945GTt-VFA Core 2 Duo Mobile Mainboard $230

ABIT IL-90MV Socket 478 Intel 945GT Micro ATX $130 (w/o PSU)

- HDMI 1.2 spec (this could be a problem for me)
Total cost is ~$720 w/o case and psu

OR if I want to be really lazy,

HDHomeRun $170

Apple Mac mini MA607LL/A (1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB
Hard Drive, Combo Drive) $600 - 25 rebate
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000BNP1MS/ref=ord_cart_shr/103-1897722-1772653?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance
- Strong Mac OS X support ;)
- RAM @ 2gb is $110
Cons:
- DVI and VGA out only
- Less fun
- No pcHDTV cards
Total cost ~$870

You can see why I said that the Tivo Series 3 is not a bad price.

I am buying new parts for my primary Linux box, so not being able to
use the two pcHDTV cards is not too great of a concern. Anyone run
more than one myth backend?
