Passive splitters with more than two outputs are really just internally cascaded two-way splitters.

In some cases too much gain can add or amplify noise.

My 4-way amp boosts the signal a lot.  Maybe too much for short runs.  I think I would suggest splitting off the original signal and putting the modem on one side, then an amp on the other.  A single output amp could then be split which might bring the signal strength down to reasonable levels.  Or, if you cable runs are short, get a lower gain, multi-output amp.
