A couple of things....

1) Try and have exactly as many splits as you need. There is a signal
loss of 6db (IIRC), for each split.

2) Leave the cable modem at the first split, and everything else on the
other side. The cable modem is the most sensitive to signal loss. It
should also have the shortest cable run.

3) The VCR idea will work, but quality may or may not be an issue.

4) Consider using a multi-split amp at the first split, it should help
significantly. I would go for a 4way split. Ensure the amp is labled as
"two way" or compatible with cable modems.

5) Try to cascade the splitters as little as possible after the first
split.
