Thing about stick shifts is that they are harder on the clutch than an automatic on a torque converter. Almost anyone with a decent sized engine needs to replace a clutch eventually, but rarely have I heard about a torque converter going bad. But, then, maybe I'm just not listening. I replaced the clutch on my Dakota at 143K, because the transmission went bad - it seems that they don't like going dry - and the clutch was pretty worn, although still usable. However, the labor involved in replacing a clutch is almost as much as replacing the transmission, while the part is not that expensive, so I thought I might as well. Then the sucker died a year and a half later...
