Any alternative fuel that cannot be liquefied or turned into gas at the site of origin and sent down a pipe has to be transported(specifically rail or trucks) requiring additional energy and creating additional waist.

Hydrogen is the real solution IMHO.

One word: Switchgrass. Output energy to Production energy ratio is 9:1. In other
words you get 9 times more energy out of it than you put into producing it.
