POSITION AVAILABLE

JOB TITLE:              Linux Systems Administrator

SUPERVISOR:             Computer Manager, School of Natural Sciences

POSITION SUMMARY:

The School of Natural Sciences Computing group is looking to expand its
team, which provides full service IT support to the school's faculty,
members and staff.  In addition to standard tasks, the group will be
undertaking the installation and support of a new 64-node Linux cluster
this year, as well as beginning to provide support for the Institute's
Simons Center for Systems Biology.   A Linux system administrator, with
a background in programming, is sought to assist in these projects, as
well as provide continued support for existing systems.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.      Day-to-day management of cluster; for example managing
job-queuing software (PBS/Torque), diagnosis of hardware problems.

2.      Programming projects related to system administration and
process automation.

3.      Installation/upgrade of user software base.

4.      User administration and support; in particular assisting users
experiencing compilation problems.

5.      Updating both user documentation and system documentation.

6.      Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

REQUIREMENTS:

1.      Experience with administering RedHat Linux essential.  A RedHat
certification is required. Previous experience with Beowulf clustering
is strongly preferred.

2.      Experience with package management tools, such as RPM required.
Building RPMs, Makefiles, etc. required.

3.      Strong programming background, including a foundation in C
programming required.  Perl, PHP, Python and Ruby knowledge is also
desirable.

4.      Experience building open source software and working with
Makefiles essential. Experience compiling 64-bit code desirable.

5.      Excellent communication (verbal and written), problem solving,
organizational and interpersonal skills required.
