Re: [PLUG] Re: OT: multiplexing speakers = solved, more or less

High power equals high heat, high wattage, which equals high voltage x high current. No standard retail sound card is designed to put out for more than 1 watt of power if that. Simply because the power supply and PCI bus won't be able to supply the necessary current and voltage for anything close to high power.
High power requires large output transistors, with big heat sinks, and large transformers; not to mention weight.

No offense, but NO that's not correct. Most sound cards are designed for line level. They are pre-amp outputs, not amplifier 8 ohm or 70 volt outputs. Line level is extremely forgiving when it comes to multiple sources inputs and outputs.

For information on line level.

If you do something like this, pay attention to your impedences and
levels. Soundcards are set up to drive speakers directly, but at low
levels. Most people plug in powered speakers (thus putting two amps in
the path).
Your mixer has to be able to handle the soundcard's level and impedence.
It should handle the impedence by default. After that, it probably
requires some make-up gain or it won't have the required level to drive
the speakers.
I'm aware of a RS battery powered mixer and a larger ac unit. Battery
unit probably won't work. The greater the mismatch, the greater the
effect on the sound (never mind the possibility of blowing something up).

ebay is your friend.
