of course, if he actually tries to USE the new card so he can give away or sell the old one, the new one will promptly fry, not be covered by warranty, and the old one will not work again when it replaces the new one.

Follow up:  Yesterday I configured the software to use eth0 for the LAN and eth1
for the Internet.  Then, I swapped the ethernet cables.  Other than one kernel
panic shortly after 8 AM today there have been NO INTERRUPTIONS in network access.

I have NO idea why that would work.  I would expect the errors to move or change
but not to simply vanish.  It makes no sense.  No matter, I have a new NIC lined
up in the event it starts acting up again!
