it's funny you propose that as a cause. just two nights ago, i ran into some connection problems. at first i thought it was a DNS problem (i couldn't ping google). so i tried pinging some IPs...STILL nothing! this was giving me problems with three machines! i tried rebooting the switch (it's been known to have some problems). twice. STILL nothing! i rebooted the router, even!

i was about to bring down the DNS server and try that (it's a windows box... it's not my network. it's my landlord's) when i get to thinking "i wonder...."
i unplug and replug the line from the switch to the router and BOOM. connectivity.

grrrr.

It could just simply be the act of reseating the network cables. I've had tech
support request that I unplug and replug the network cable, or switch ends,
in the past - what they're trying to do is force you to make sure the cables
are plugged in correctly.

If you're using older cards/cables, the catches on the sockets or cables can
get worn so they don't fit quite a snugly as they need to, so the vibration
from the machine can loosen them to the point you get intermittent
connections on the wires.
