that'd be the way to go.
also, are you 100% sure the hardware is all okay?

any of the Gentoo http mirrors, under releases, installcd.
e.g. http://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/pub/gentoo/releases/sparc/
or http://ftp.ucsb.edu/pub/mirrors/linux/gentoo/releases/sparc/

I tried both the 2007.0 and 2006.1 distributions, both kernels on
each.  I burned them at 4x; the 2006.1 booted to a point and then
printed a bunch of whitespace to the screen and then stopped.  I
thought maybe the old Lite-On CD-ROM drive had an issue with new media
burned at faster speeds, so I burned the 2007.0 iso at 1x and it
booted as far as the 2006.1 one did.  so maybe it's just a media issue
corrupting the reading of the data?  these disk images top out at
400MB so I doubt it's an "80-minute" CD (tighter / out of
specification spiral) thing.

maybe I should try burning a net boot disc at 1x instead, and try to
minimize how much data actually needs to be read from the disc...
