Maybe a better option would be to borrow a harddrive-based camcorder. That would already save the video in a file format. Easily transfer it over USB and you're done. Mini-DV is good, but it's more of a pain. Having a Firewire port along with a cable is less common than USB, although mini-DV camcorders do have USB interfaces as well. A capture program is needed. Then the video still needs to be compressed and encoded. So, unless editing needs to be done, mini-DV is just more work.
