turns out he's not a newbie (he mailed me off-list); he's even taught it a while back. it was just a while since he's touched FC, from what i can tell.

but i definitely second CentOS. it's in my list of recommended distros/OSes for servers.
(the full list:
debian - all-around multi-purpose server
centos - database hosting, compiling, etc.
gentoo - compiling (esp. cross-platform compiling)
slackware - multi-purpose (better cross-platform support- albeit unofficial, ideal for "server-specialized" hardware i.e. ARM arch, etc.)
openbsd - security (only had 2 remote holes in the default install in the last TEN+ YEARS! nobody else can make that claim))
