I had a similar problem a few years back when I was trying to decide whether 
to use tbird or kmail.  What was recommended to me was a combination of 
fetchmail and dovecot to create a local imap server.  Then point everything 
to the local imap.  

I know your problem is slightly different because you want to access the mail 
from different machines rather that different MUAs on the same machine, but I 
think the solution may be similar as you can point your other machines to the 
imap that you have set up.
