this inspired me to remove the ATI Rage 3D Pro add-in card and try the
built-in GPU.  booting from this worked swimmingly.

instead I put in 3 quad-10/100 NICs, and gentoo seems to poll
eth0-eth12 just fine.  (a 10/100 port is included on the motherboard
too.)

Good to know there are problems with fbdev and that add-in card in Gentoo's installer. Thanks for posting back regarding this. Good luck with the remainder of your install.
