Maybe SCIM could help.  I used SCIM and Anthy to switch from English input to Japanese.  There is a long list of languages available so I guess special characters are possible too.  If I can type kana and convert that to kanji, I think accented letters would be very easy.  heh

I have compose_key set up at home but can't seem to get it to work at the
office. I hate using gui grids for stuff I like to use all the time like, 将ア
