I use a Sierra Wireless U720 from Sprint with Ubuntu without issue.  We
pay $49.95/month for unlimited use.  It's USB and the only issue is
initial activation.  You will need a friend with a Windows PC to
initially activate it.  However, activation information is stored in
NVRAM so once activated it's just a matter of setting up a PPP
connection over the appropriate dev node dialing #777 with blank
user-name and password.
