It was just getting fun. ----- Original Message ----- From: Stephen Gran <steve@lobefin.net> To: plug@lists.phillylinux.org Sent: Sunday, December 9, 2007 10:42:38 PM GMT-0500 Subject: Re: [PLUG] Wireless access - from a security expert On Sun, Dec 09, 2007 at 10:24:11PM -0500, Brian Vagnoni said: > According to the FBI, it is not illegal to scan AP's, but once a theft > of service, DOS, or theft of information occurs, then it becomes a > federal violation through 18USC 1030 > http://www.usdoj.gov/criminal/cybercrime/1030_new.html Having now read 18 U.S.C. 1030, I can say that it doesn't actually help your argument at all. It makes no mention of using someone's open AP. It is about using or accessing computers or networks for criminal activities, with a large focus on crimes targetting US government or financial institutions. It makes no mention at all of home networks, and it even sets lower bounds on damages and intent even when accessing government networks. However, I am in agreement that there's probably no point in going on with this thread. This will probably be it for me. -- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Stephen Gran | You need no longer worry about the | | steve@lobefin.net | future.
