Re: [PLUG] email hosting

I use noip.com a dynamic IP service from my home over my cable line with my own mail server. I have a backup e-mail account with them so I never loss mail. Not that my line goes down much. I have an alternate port SMTP service with them as well which takes care of the lack of control over my lines PTR record which reverses to a Comcast address rather than my own.

The question is do you want the trouble of hosting your own and maintaining it(computer running 24/7, your time, power(cost), hardware, software, av, firewall, spam) or do you want to turn on your computer and get your mail without reinventing the wheel? It's a personal choice I like doing it. I also like not having any restriction placed on me as far as how many accounts, or how much mail. I also think having your own domain is a little more professional(no offense meant Toby) than free accounts. I also never have to do anything with it. The only time I have to reboot is when there is an update that requires it.

This topic has been covered before in great detail you should also search the archives.

Good luck in whatever you chose
