[PLUG] emacs and modeline

I want to put a word in the modeline of emacs (22.1.1). But how do I
get it there once I know what it is? This is not as simple as it
sounds. I spent time reading the code that puts the time, date, mode,
etc. in the mode line. I don't see the part where it actually does
it.

     (display-in-modeline-does-not-exist at-column word)

Thanks for any pointers.
