I will investigate Dia tomorrow.  

I am not using visio because I do not have a need for a windows machine 
at home at all.  I was just amusing the thought that visio was a good 
solution, albeit a costly one.  If there is something I can use which is 
OSS and does what I need then I will use it instead.  Even if there is 
not a free package that does the job,  there is always pen and paper!

I'm sure there will be something.
