Yeah, I used to judge the popularity of various technologies, and
their upward or downward trends, by walking into a big bookstore
and counting the number of shelves or bookcases devoted to each
topic.  At one time, the computer section at B&N covered an entire
wall of the store.  No more!  Now, for such trends I check things
like:
    http://www.indeed.com/jobtrends?q=red+hat%2C+ubuntu%2C+suse
and:
    http://www.google.com/trends?q=red+hat%2C+ubuntu%2C+suse
