Nope. I opened up OOO, typed random stuff, saved as a word 97/2000/xp
doc, closed OOO, opened by both 1)double clicking on the file 2)
opening via File -> Open, was able to save both ways.

I don't see anything obvious here:

I'm running i386, BTW
