I have done Xubuntu to Kubuntu migrations (7.10 and 8.04), and never had a problem. The only things to think about are things like kdm vs. gdm. I think there may be a couple of other packages where the kubuntu choices replace the xubuntu choices. It would be interesting to see what dependency errors you get,.
