There is a wonderful utility that will run on either icedove or
thunderbird called enigmail which is a front end for gnupg.
under Debian:
apt-cache search enigmail
enigmail - Enigmail - GPG support for Thunderbird
enigmail will sign and/or encrypt any email like this one.
Any mail that is not encrypted is open for all to read. Any email that
is not encrypted should not be considered secure.
