Which is most likely your root problem, or...   Your partition table was hosed 
and its lying to you now.

Have you tried System Rescue CD?   

Personally, I __like__ having to reinstall, but you may want to be sure you've 
exhausted all possiblities before doing so
What does fdisk say?  If your partition table might be damaged it would be the first program I'd go to.  Right after getting all data in /home backed up to a separate drive(!).
