If you're forced to spend at least part of your life in Windows check out "Portable Ubuntu for Windows".  This is neither a Dual Boot/Wubi or a VM.  It is Hardy 8.04 LTS running in Windows (Jaunty is due out 5/17).  It gives you a non-intrusive panel bar at the top middle of your desktop.  It updates perfectly with apt-get and allows you to copy-and-paste across OS's.  It hastotally replaced Cygwin on my 2 XP Pro machines.
