i'm doing all this as root until directed differently

[root@cjohnson ~]# ls -l /dev/net/tun
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 10, 200 2010-01-17 15:19 /dev/net/tun
[root@cjohnson ~]# lsmod|grep tun
tun                    12508  0
[root@cjohnson ~]#

both ends are running on real iron. server end is a hacked/modded pix-520 actually. ;-)

Also, is this a dedicated/physical host, or virtualized? Some virtualization platforms (openvz/virtuozzo for instance) require special permissions be enabled hostside for a guest to use the /dev/net/tun device
