I worked for a company that used a "Laptop Lojack" service, which was based off IP. It would geolocate based on IP and tell you where stolen laptops were. They're work with the police to recover stolen laptops: I think we had about a 50% success rate with them. I remember one ending up in the Dominican Republic! The other nice functionality was the ability to remote wipe. IIRC, it was about $100 per unit. If you're storing very sensitive data, it is a no brainer. The company was called AbsoluteSoftware: http://www.absolute.com/en/ There site may contain some hints on their recovery techniques. Good luck! I used to have Adeona but I found that DHT is no longer working, and that didn't get webcam shots anyways, so I thought I'd roll my own. The script will check for a certain subdomain that I will only create when the laptop is stolen, and then make a tarball with info that might help me find the thief and get my laptop back. >> >> So far I'm getting >> *webcam frame grabs using streamer >> *screen captures with scrot >> *wireless network scan (iwlist) >> *IP address and routing info of course > > See if you can have it use HTML5 location services to get an accurate location of the device. You'd probably need to script WebKit, which shouldn't be too hard. > -- > Thanks and best regards, > Chris Nehren > > ___________________________________________________________________________ > Philadelphia Linux Users Group -- http://www.phillylinux.org > Announcements - http://lists.phillylinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug-announce > General Discussion -- http://lists.phillylinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug > ___________________________________________________________________________ Philadelphia Linux Users Group -- http://www.phillylinux.org Announcements - http://lists.phillylinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug-announce General Discussion -- http://lists.phillylinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug
