I read the /. article comments and it seems that grub2 writing to free
space between the mbr and the first partition is the problem.  With a
/boot partition you could mount it as read only and have a minimal level
of security.  Writing to this unallocated free space seems like a bad
idea and that may be what is causing the problems which could be caused
by your system bios.
