So on the broken upgrade, this guide:

  http://library.linode.com/troubleshooting/upgrade-ubuntu-10.04

Spelled out what we did wrong with the upgrade to begin with, and how
to recover from it easily by setting up a finix recovery profile,
which was easy and a clearly written step by step guide. Looks like
the node is back in business.

Thanks,

Kyle
