If I recall correctly, HTML mail was a Netscape innovation.  At the
time MS was doing MAPI only.  Outlook wasn't even out, and the mail
client that came with Windows was MS Mail.  I can't remember which
version of Netscape it was that introduced it, but it was pre-AOL
ownership of Netscape.
