Not my experience. Daughter bought an iBook, defective out of the box. Apple wanted to repair or replace with reconditioned. Identical scenario with neighbors son and former co-worker. 

Dads screamed and defective equipment was replaced with new. Thirty-ish co-worker took the reconditioned replacement. I think she is the target demographic for Apple sales, so they probably get away with it most of the time.
