I actually JUST started playing around with lmms! It's pretty awesome for arrangement.audacity  should be used for getting the raw input and cleaning it up and processing, and the samples should be imported into lmms for track compilation and arrangement.

As for devices, the tascam devices have been supported in vanilla kernel as of 2.6.20's i think (around .22 if memory serves correctly). Usb 3.0 is in-kernel as of. 37, i think- but good luck finding a device that offfers it. Lastly, as i recall usb 2.1 supports even faster transfer speed than 1394 (firewire). So your son oughtn't worry about that. ;)
