how would this be different?

Because it's not 20 years ago? :-)

Seriously, things change a LOT in 20 years, both in hardware, software
design and development, infrastructure (high speed access cheaply),
mind-boggingly cheap hardware costs compared to 20 years ago, different client expectations (perhaps), different implementation (based on what
they learned 20 years ago), etc.

Not to say that it would work this time, but the environment is so
different now, the results might be, too.

Because 20 years ago your maximum bandwidth was basically a 28kbps modem, and today you have FiOS at home and at the office for $100 a month.
